We’ve married off your daughters – Abductors of Kebbi school girls tell parents

Bandits who abducted some schoolgirls from the Federal Girls’ College Yawuri, Kebbi State have told parents that they have married off their daughters. Some of the parents who raised alarm on Sunday, told Daily Trust that the abductors sent to them footages showing that their daughters were already married. Recall that bandits on June 16, invaded the school premises and whisked scores of students to an unknown destination. A police officer was also killed during the incident.

Efforts by DAILY POST to reach the school management for confirmation of the development, proved abortive as at press time. Meanwhile, one of the parents who spoke with BBC Hausa, said the kidnappers always inform them that their daughters are doing well. He added that “sometimes they call and give us our daughters to talk to us. If your child has your number then they will call and talk to you. “But I have never spoken with my daughter since the time they were abducted”.

However, The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services, Rep. Tanko Sununu has said that the attack on the Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri in Kebbi State was a promise fulfilled by bandits. The lawmaker spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Friday. Sununu, who represents Ngaski/ Shanga/ Yauri Federal Constituency, narrated what transpired in the build-up to the attack.

He said, “What really happened is that about two weeks ago, we had an episode when bandits residing within parts of the areas bordering Zamfara, Niger, and Kebbi came up through one of the villages in my constituency. “They killed a policeman and found their way until they reached Ibeto area where we’ve a quarry, killed some security men and kidnapped some of the foreign workers in the quarry and left. “Ten days later, they came back to the same area and entered into my constituency bordering some villages, and they had more than a seven-hour field operation going from house to house, room to room, collecting money, phones, cows, and any machine they deemed useful for their operations, and they left a message behind that they would soon be back.

“To fulfil their promise yesterday, we had intelligence that they were on their way coming. Around 10:30 am, they reached their final destination – the Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri.” DAILY POST had reported that armed men suspected to be bandits had abducted the students and teachers on Thursday. The bandits killed a police officer before whisking the four staff and an unspecified number of students to an unknown location.

One of the students abducted from the school was shot dead during a gun duel between soldiers and the abductors. Meanwhile, five of the abducted students and two teachers of the Federal Government College in Birnin-Yauri, Kebbi State, have been rescued. Their rescue was disclosed by the Nigerian Army on Friday. The army also confirmed that during a gun duel that ensued, an exhausted student gave up the ghost.
