The European Union Commission, has stated that it seeks to propose a regime which will ensure that perpetrators of human rights violations around the world will be sanctioned. President of EU commission, Ursula von de Leyen made this known on Monday, as she stated “We need to stand up for human rights and freedoms which are under attack.”

Her statement is coming at a time that #EndSARS protests have been rocking Nigeria, with several protesters being arrested, detained, brutalized and killed in some cases. Taking to her Twitter account, Vonde Leyen decried the several cases of protesters being beaten or imprisoned in nations where citizens are fighting for their freedoms.

She wrote;

         “We need to stand up for human rights & freedoms, which are under attack.

         “Peaceful protestors are being beaten or imprisoned, opposition politicians are attacked.
         “Today, we propose an EU regime to address human rights violations globally,
          empowering us to sanction perpetrators.”
