ENUGU — A violent crackdown on members of the Nigerian separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by government forces left at least twenty-one (21) people dead on Sunday in Enugu, in the southeast of the country.

The raid on the IPOB family gathering in Emene in Enugu by government forces also left scores of people injured and dozens arrested.

“They invaded the meeting ground of IPOB activists, shot sporadically and killed many persons,” said eyewitness.

Government forces also took away people with serious gunshot wounds.

“Today, the Nigerian security personnel stormed IPOB meeting ground in Enugu and started shooting sporadically which consumed lives of 21 members and 47 arrested for just no cause or provocation. It is unfortunate that security operatives murdered innocent members and carried their lifeless bodies to unknown locations,” the separatist group spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, said in a statement while confirming the report.

Nigerian government forces claimed to have lost 5 personnel in the incident, but IPOB called the claim false.

“It is clear to all that IPOB doesn’t indulge or carry arm or involve with any object. IPOB is a peaceful movement and we must remain so till Biafra is totally achieved,” said IPOB.
